- How much does a cake cost? Costs vary depending on details & complexity of the design.
Currently cakes iced in buttercream start at $2.50/serving & fondant cakes start at $3.50/serving.
Cupcake towers start at $1.75/serving.
- When should I order my cake? You can reserve the date of your wedding at any time. I only
book ONE wedding cake per week-end & try to book no more than 3 a month, so dates fill up
quickly. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required to hold the date & locks in current pricing.
- Do you deliver? Yes! Wedding cakes 3 tiers & larger are delivered for free in Jackson County.
Outside of Jackson County, there is a delivery fee of $1/mile charged one-way. For example, the
average delivery fee to Lansing would be approx $35. I use Yahoo Maps to calculate distance from
my location to your reception venue. Party cakes are pick-up only unless arrangements are made at
the time of order & may incur a delivery fee.
- Can we save money renting a fake cake or fake tiers? With Icing On Top does not rent fake
cakes. If it was always your dream to have a HUGE wedding cake, but you don't need that many
servings of cake, we can definitely incorporate fake tiers to make your cake look bigger. Please
keep in mind that the cost will be the same as real cake because it takes the same number of hours
& the same amount of icing to decorate styrofoam as it does real cake, plus styrofoam costs as
much (or MORE) than the ingredients of a cake.
- Why are cupcake towers so expensive... they're JUST cupcakes. While it may seem that
cupcakes would be quick & simple, that's just not the case. The fact is that it takes great skill to
bake moist cupcakes. It is very simple to over-bake & end up with dry cupcakes. Add to that the
amount of time to bake large quantities & the number of times each cupcake is handled from oven
until the actual tower set-up & it equals as much or more time than it takes to bake & decorate a
small wedding cake.
- My venue requires me to use a licensed baker, are you licensed? YES!! With Icing On Top is
licensed by the State of MI Dept of Agriculture.
- Do you decorate cakes with fresh flowers? Fresh flowers can be a beautiful addition to your
wedding cake, however there are some things to consider when using fresh flowers. If fresh
flowers are to be used, YOU are responsible to order & pay for them unless other arrangements
are made & noted on the signed contract. All flowers need to be arranged in containers or taped
into corsages for food safety reasons. Flowers stems should NEVER be directly inserted into a
cake. Would you want to eat the serving of cake that had a bare flower stem stuck in it?
- What is a Groom's cake? A groom's cake is a southern tradition that is quickly gaining popularity
in other regions of the country. Usually chocolate, but can be any flavor, it is usually given as a
surprise to the groom from his bride. The design can be anywhere from chocolate cake with rich
chocolate ganache and chocolate dipped strawberries to a carved 3-D design reflecting the
groom's favorite hobby or other interests.
- Doesn't fondant taste bad? NO!! There is a certain, widely available brand of fondant that does
taste disgusting, however there are several good quality commercial fondants & home made
recipes for fondant that are actually very tasty. Fondant covered cakes also have a layer of
buttercream underneath which allows a person to peel off the fondant & still enjoy icing with their
cake if they so choose. Don't let rumors of horrible taste scare you away if you prefer the look of
a smooth matte finish fondant cake. I gladly provide a piece of fondant for you to taste at your
consultation.
- What is a kitchen cake? A kitchen cake is a great way to provide additional servings when the
main cake is not large enough to feed all of your guests. Kitchen cakes are plainly iced,
undecorated layer cakes. They are kept in the kitchen and cut and served along with the main cake.
There is a minimum order of 100 servings for the main cake before discounted kitchen cakes can
be ordered. Please inquire about special pricing.
- Why can't I order a small wedding cake from you & buy sheet cakes from
Sam's/Meijer/etc? Because my business relies heavily on word of mouth advertising, I cannot
have my reputation attached to cakes I did not provide. If any additional cakes (sheet cakes,
cupcakes, etc) are on site, I will not leave your wedding cake at the reception & no refund will be
given. If such a situation occurred, the wedding cake would be donated to a local shelter.
- How many cakes do you do on any given week-end? With Icing On Top will only contract to
do one wedding per week-end. We are concerned with quality, not quantity, thus your cake will be
the only wedding cake scheduled.
- Why do you have minimum orders? I only need cake for 5-10 people. Most of the cakes we
do, especially 3-D sculpted cakes, can not be scaled down to a very small number of servings.
Many times the amount of hours spent on a custom cake can be equal to the time it would take to
do a small wedding cake, therefore the number of cakes we book are limited & we do not offer
sheet cakes.
- Do you freeze your cakes? Every cake is baked to order. We do not have freezers full of cakes,
ready to grab at a moment's notice. This is why it may be hard to accommodate last minute orders.
PLEASE plan ahead! :o)
Thank You,
Sherry
